From the moment I arrived, I could feel the calm settling over the streets. The town was quiet, and the only signs of life came from the buses full of schoolchildren and pensioners who had come to connect with the history of this famous place. 🤷‍♂️

My walk began at the center, where the monument to Hristo Botev rises majestically. Standing before it, I found myself thinking about the courage, the ideals, and the sacrifice of the great revolutionary who left an indelible mark on Bulgarian history. ✍️

As I got to know the town better, I learned some fascinating facts about its past. It was once called Kalifer, after its founder, Voivode Kalifer. Back in the 16th century, he and his band of men used to raid the Turkish caravans passing through the Balkan Mountains. After enough raids, the sultan allowed them to settle here, on the condition that they stop their attacks. And so, in 1533, Kalofer was born. 👊

Later on, the town grew into one of the most progressive and enlightened settlements in Bulgaria. It's no coincidence that by the 19th century, people had started calling it "Altan Kalofer" – Golden Kalofer. Despite the hardships it endured, including being burned to the ground in 1877, its people rebuilt it once again, driven by their unyielding Bulgarian spirit.

What impressed me most was the Hristo Botev National Museum, located in Botev's Garden. I explored the memorial house, the exhibition hall, and the monuments to Hristo Botev and his mother, Ivanka Boteva. 🙏

The house isn't actually Botev's original birthplace – that was destroyed when Kalofer was burned down in 1877. It was later rebuilt on the site of his family's last home, based on the memories and accounts of people who had known them. This is where Botev spent his childhood, where he returned after his studies in Odessa, and where he received the issue of the newspaper "Gaida" that published his very first poem – "To My Mother." 🙆‍♂️

A place where history continues to live on, and where the spirit of Botev still inspires everyone who crosses its threshold. 😯
