So much has changed since my last visit here! 🙆♂️ They've added pavilions, a playground, and a small scale model that helps you picture what the fortress looked like back in the day. 🧱
And the history here is serious business. This is the place where Medieval Bulgaria won its last military victory before falling under Ottoman rule. In 1332, Tsar Ivan Alexander crushed the forces of Byzantine Emperor Andronikos III near Rusokastro. Following the battle, the Byzantines signed a treaty ceding to Bulgaria everything south of the Balkan Mountains along the Black Sea coast, all the way to Ahtopol. 😯
And here's a fun fact — the ancient fortress gets its name from the red rocks it was built from. 🧱
My advice: set aside an hour or two, take a leisurely stroll around, and soak in the views. It's a place with an incredible history that's well worth the detour from Burgas! ✍️
