The journey to Veykata Peak begins in the picturesque village of Gorno Kapinovo – the southernmost settlement in Bulgaria. From the very first steps, you can feel yourself entering a different world – wild, quiet, and little-known. Ahead of you rises the Gyumyurdzhinski Snezhnik, part of the Eastern Rhodopes – a place that for a long time remained inaccessible and shrouded in mystery. 🤌
The hike isn't easy, I'll be honest with you. That nearly 800-meter elevation gain really makes itself felt in your legs, and the trail winds for hours through dense beech forest. 🌳🌳🌳
Along the way, we stopped at the abandoned Hvoynova Polyana hut and the small lake beside it – a place that seems frozen in time. The water is cold and clear, and the air is thick with the scent of the forest. 🌳
The higher you climb toward the ridge, the wilder the landscape becomes. ⛰️ The rocky path leads over Trite Kladentsa Peak before finally bringing you to your destination – Veykata, the southernmost geographic point in Bulgaria. 🗺
What greets you at the top is hard to put into words. On a clear day, your gaze stretches endlessly north across the Rhodopes, and south toward Greece, the Aegean Sea, and its islands. 🙆♂️
Up there, there was no noise. No planes, no cities, no rushing around. Just wind, open space, and a deep, pure silence. ⛰️🫶
