The mid-antique fortress of Trajan's Gate dates back to the 2nd century, when it stood right on the border between Thrace and Macedonia. It's also known by the names Stenos and Shtipon, and its modern name comes from a bit of a misunderstanding — the Roman fortress guarding the pass was mistakenly credited to Emperor Trajan (53-117). In reality, the structure is actually later. 📜
The pass earned its place in history in 986, when Emperor Basil II launched a campaign against Bulgaria, aiming to seize Bulgarian territory. On August 17th, Tsar Samuil ambushed the Byzantines at the pass, and a large part of their army was wiped out. Basil II himself only just managed to escape with his life.
