Stamford is an ancient market town, founded back in 1462. The whole place is built from local limestone, and that's exactly why it has held on to so much of its traditional character — modern industry has barely touched it. As you wander through, you get the feeling that the buildings around you have more stories to tell than an entire history book.
The town is best known for its beautiful Georgian architecture and its lively centre set along the River Welland.🚤 In 1967, Stamford became the first conservation area in England and Wales — that's the term for a district considered to have special architectural or historic interest, worthy of preservation. And honestly, here it's entirely justified.
In 2021, the Sunday Times named it the best place to live in the Midlands, calling it "an architectural eye-candy town." After wandering its streets myself, I'm not about to argue.🥸
