Even before I reached the Turtles Rock Sanctuary, the road led me through soft rolling hills and quiet nature — exactly that lazy kind of beauty so typical of the Eastern Rhodopes. The site lies near the village of Fotinovo, in the Kirkovo Municipality, and by the time I got there, I'd already imagined ten different versions of what these famous "turtles" might actually look like.
When I finally arrived, strange stone formations opened up before me — and yes, they really do look like turtles. 🐢🐢🐢 They just sit there, calm and still, as if they've been waiting for someone for centuries.
According to archaeologists, these aren't random formations — this was once a place of cult worship, faith, and ritual. 🙆♂️ It's hard to picture exactly what took place here, but there's no doubt it once meant something important to someone.
I left with the feeling that I'd seen something ancient and different — a small but powerful trace of the past. If you're ever in the area, spare it half an hour. It's worth it. 😊
