Today I finally set foot in the charming and historic Matera! 🇮🇹 And honestly — it's hard to believe that less than 70 years ago, around 15,000 people, mostly farmers, were still living here in the caves. No natural light, no ventilation, no water, and no electricity.
Today this same town is the European Capital of Culture for 2019 — a title it won after competing against five other Italian cities: Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna, and Siena. Matera is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, and once you wander through its stone-carved streets, you understand exactly why. 👌
