Alberobello is one of those places that look like they've stepped straight out of a fairy tale. It's a captivating little village in the Puglia region, famous for its trulli — whitewashed stone houses topped with distinctive conical roofs. 🙆♂️ Ah, those trulli... pure exotic beauty! 🤗 And the best part: it's just 50 km from Bari, making it perfect for a day trip by car. 🚗
And here comes the twist that left me speechless. Historical research suggests that the shape of the trullo mimics the yurts of the ancient Bulgars. 😮 There are plenty of documents proving that the ancient Bulgars once settled in these Italian lands, yet most Italians know nothing about it. In Celle di Bulgheria, in the Bulgheria mountains, there's even a statue of the ancient Bulgar khan Alcek — brother of Khan Asparukh, the founder of the Bulgarian state. He arrived in these lands in the 7th century and struck a deal with the local king to settle here with his people. It's likely that at first these people lived in tents, and later began building homes out of stone in the shape they were used to — with a hearth in the center and a smoke vent at the top.
Either way, this unique architectural style is a must-see for anyone chasing a picturesque landscape. I wandered through the Rione Monti district, where over 1,000 trulli cluster along the hillside — a view so stunning it practically overheated my phone camera. 🚶♂️ I also stopped by some craft boutiques, where I dutifully supported the local artisans. 🤦🤭 And, of course, I couldn't leave without trying some orecchiette pasta. 🍝
