The capital of Croatia! π The city definitely has a lot to offer. π The 13th-century cathedral βͺ is especially beautiful and is one of the tallest buildings in Croatia, yet the true symbol of the city is the roof of St. Mark's Church β the result of a brilliant collaboration between renowned Croatian architects, artists, and sculptors.
On the roof of the church you'll find the modern coat of arms of Zagreb (a white castle on a red background) alongside the historic coat of arms of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia. That roof alone is reason enough to make your way up to the Upper Town.
On top of that, the central square, the National Theatre, and the park connecting the city centre to the train station are all instant eye-catchers, along with plenty of other beautiful buildings. π
In the centre of Zagreb there's also a monument to Ban Josip JelaΔiΔ, the city's 19th-century governor, shown on horseback with his sabre raised. π‘οΈπ Originally, the statue faced Hungary β the country Croatia was at war with β symbolically threatening it. Under Tito, the monument was removed, and when it was later put back, it was turned to face the opposite direction β so now, sabre in hand, he greets the Croatians instead. π‘οΈπ
